Getting Started with Therapy

  • It’s very common to wonder whether therapy is “right” for you or whether your situation is “bad enough.” Therapy doesn’t have to be a last resort or something you only pursue when you’ve hit rock bottom. Many people seek counselling to better understand themselves, navigate life transitions, improve relationships, or learn new ways of coping. If something in your life feels challenging, overwhelming, or simply not the way you want it to be, therapy can be a supportive space to explore that.

  • Therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to understand what’s bringing you in and what you’d like to change. Sessions often involve talking through current concerns, exploring emotions and patterns, and developing greater insight and self-compassion. While therapy can feel supportive and relieving, it can also bring up discomfort at times — especially when working toward meaningful change. We move at a pace that feels respectful of your needs and capacity.

  • I aim to create a warm, non-judgmental, and collaborative space where you feel safe to show up as you are. My approach is person-centred, emotionally focused (EFIT), and highly dynamic and adaptive, meaning sessions are tailored to you rather than following a rigid formula. Together, we’ll focus on understanding your experiences, emotions, and patterns, while also working toward practical and meaningful change.

  • This varies from person to person. It’s completely normal to want relief or change as quickly as possible, and we’ll talk openly about your hopes and expectations. Therapy length depends on many factors, including your goals, the concerns you’re bringing in, and what’s happening in your life.

    Typically, clients start with sessions once a week or every two weeks, especially at the beginning. Over time, sessions may become less frequent (such as monthly) as things stabilize or goals are met. We’ll create a plan together and adjust it as your needs evolve.

Online Therapy

  • Yes — research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy when delivered thoughtfully. I offer online sessions in the same way I offer in-person sessions, with the same level of care, structure, and therapeutic approach.

    Online therapy may be less effective if:

    • You don’t have a private or confidential space

    • Your internet connection is unreliable

    • You find virtual communication particularly draining or difficult to engage with

    We can always discuss whether online therapy feels like the right fit for you.

  • Online sessions are hosted through the same secure platform used for booking (Jane App). You’ll receive a link to your session about one hour before your appointment. I recommend using Google Chrome as your browser for the best experience. No special downloads are required.

Payment & Insurance

  • I currently accept e-transfer, cash, and cheques. After payment, you will receive a receipt that includes all necessary professional information so you can manually submit it to your insurance provider, if you have coverage.

  • Many extended health benefits plans in BC include coverage for Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Coverage amounts and percentages vary by plan, so I recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm:

    • Whether RCC services are covered

    • Your annual coverage amount

    • The percentage reimbursed per session

Walk & Talk Therapy

  • Walk & talk therapy is a form of counselling that takes place outdoors while walking side-by-side. Some people find movement and being in nature helps them feel more relaxed, grounded, and open.

  • By choosing walk & talk therapy, you are agreeing to sessions taking place rain or shine. That said, there are circumstances where walk & talk therapy cannot safely or reasonably occur due to weather or environmental conditions.

    The cancellation fee will be waived if walk & talk therapy cannot proceed due to:

    • Severe weather warnings or advisories

    • Extreme rainfall that creates unsafe walking conditions (e.g., flooding, poor visibility)

    • Snow, ice, or freezing conditions that increase the risk of slips or falls

    • High winds or windstorms that pose a safety risk

    • Poor air quality (e.g., wildfire smoke or air quality advisories)

    • Any other weather-related condition that, in my professional judgment, makes the session unsafe or impractical

    In these situations, you will have the option to move the session to a virtual format instead.

    These details are reviewed as part of the informed consent process for walk & talk therapy. Consent is voluntary and ongoing.

  • I kindly ask that clients do not bring dogs to walk & talk sessions, as this helps minimize distractions and ensures the session remains focused and therapeutically effective. An exception is made for registered service dogs, which are always welcome.

Accessibility & Office Information

  • Yes. The building where my office is located is wheelchair accessible, and my office space is also wheelchair accessible. If you have any accessibility needs or questions that aren’t addressed here, you’re welcome to reach out so we can discuss how to best support you.

Policies & Practice Information

  • I require at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

    • Less than 48 hours’ notice: billed at 50% of the session fee

    • Less than 24 hours’ notice: billed at 100% of the session fee

    This policy is not intended to be punitive, but rather to respect the time reserved for you and to help increase accessibility to counselling for other clients.

  • In my practice, “young adult” generally refers to individuals 19 to 35 years old, and many of my clients fall within this range. However, I’m happy to support individuals outside this age range if their needs align with my experience.

    If you are under 19, I am required to obtain legal guardian consent before beginning counselling.

  • That’s completely okay. Human experiences don’t always fit neatly into labels. I am trained and comfortable working with concerns beyond those listed on my website. During a free phone consultation, we can explore whether your current challenges fall within my scope of practice. If not, I will do my best to help refer you to another counsellor or mental health professional who may be a better fit.
